gents
the trigger guard and rear sight assembly has arrived.

??? trigger guard ???
I have noticed that the trigger guard does not simply slide into place and from observations appears that the rear section of the magazine house needs cutting and shaping. is this correct or is there an alternative sollution.

??? rear sight ???
this is still connected to what appears to be a section of the original barrel or similar part . does this also need grinding off or is there a way to remove it .

I am so close to completing now need help on these last bits before I get all jackie chan on it

cheers
jeks

both need cutting/grinding/shaping and a fair bit of it im affraid :(

You are correct that the trigger housing mag well needs significant cutting in order to make the receiver fit, you can just about see it in the photos I posted earlier in this thread. The rear sight isn't too much of a chore, you only need to leave enough of the tube section in order to hold on the top of the reciever so the araldite and filler can get a god purchase. I'll try to post some pictures later as a kind of "how to" if it'll be of any help.

Here we go. I nicked the pictures from Ebay, as I didn't have time to strip my gun down that far.

The red portions in the pictures are the bits that need to be discarded after cutting.

Hope this helps.

I didn't have to "mill" out the trigger hole. I had to extend it slightly but that was it. I've found my method has given no problems at all with the fit of the mags either to be honest. As for the sight, the pictures I posted are hardly meant to be blueprints, only a guide. I've found by leaving a few mil of steel on the sight, that it sticks much better using araldite by dint of the fact that there is a bit more for it to bind to. It's slightly higher but not so much as to look wrong or affect the aiming of the gun.

Don't forget I tackled my 2 K98's using only a dremel, a drill and some sandpaper! I don't have access to milling machines and lathes unfortunately and have to make do.

well,
after a day of grinding, cutting, shaping, puttying, jobbing, botching putting back together, I think i'm almost done.
just going to model a front sight, paint up the green putty in a more appropriate colour and TA DAAA one mauser 98k ish

Gents
can i just say a big thank you to you all, your input and assistance has been greatly appreciated throughout this project. lets get together at normandy, show off and brag on our little guns. I, for one, am extremely chuffed how my first project has turned out and i'm looking now into project No.2.

Hi all
I have been watching the 98k conversions with considerable interest and am going to attempt one myself. I was wondering, has anyone any ideas about hiding the plastic magazine. Its not really in keeping with the rest of the gun and I was thinking of covering it with a steel plate or something.

Good luck with the conversion. As someone who is also in the middle of doing this as a project I would say the look of the mag is really the least of your concerns.

I have seen some people paint them and do a wood grain effect to match the stock. Or it may be possible to glue a thin veneer of wood to the bottom of the mag and stain it to match. what you dont want is for it to end up sitting proud from the bottom of the stock which would show up even more.

Personally I dont see it as much of an issue as the underside of the stock is not really seen much during use.

As boshman wrote above, the mag , ifound , was one of the easier elements to the project. although still not a simple process. the position , i have found , is directly above my left hand when in a firing stance. To be honest , concentrate on trying to get the other more visible items correct, take your time and do it bit by bit. these are not a project to be rushed as it takes some gentle fine tuning at times to get things to fit, and at times it is very much like getting the proverbial square peg in the round hole.

All the best with your project, ask if your stuck, the guys on this will help out where possible and their information is helpful throughout

Thanks for the input guys.
Im hoping to make it look as authentic as possible so I will be sure to take my time over it. I was originally thinking of using an L96 as the action but I think that the magazine is too deep. Just as well that I ordered an MP001 before the VCR ban!

Regarding the magazine, I was considering extending the existing steel cover forward to hide the plastic mag, possibly with a hinge for access.

I don't see how covering the magazine area with a steel plate will make it look more "authentic". It will look quite the reverse in my opinion and I think you're just making more work for yourself. If I were to do any more conversions, I think I'd just shorten the plastic mags to 20 rounds or so capacity, so a smaller cutout would be required and no cutting of the trigger guard would be needed either. Now, THAT would more "right".

I agree with Sgt Heide, a steel plate would look more "wrong" also it would stick out proud of the bottom of the stock because the mag sits pretty much flush with the bottom of the stock anyway.

Anyway, all this talk of magwells has made me finally get going and get mine cut! :) For some reason I have been a bit apprehensive about doing this part of the conversion but I went for it tonight and it all went off without a hitch. marked it out and drilled it with a 19mm hole saw then attacked it with Chisels, Files and sandpaper, I didnt even go near the dremel for this part :o Mag is a nice snug fit too. next step is the hop support cut-out.

Point taken. Actually, its clear from boshmans photographs that tidy workmanship makes the mag look like its meant to be there. Im waiting for a stock coming from chelmshord and eager to get stuck in!

Thanks chaps. yeah Im pretty chuffed how its turning out so far :)

Just had a slight mare though, was tinkering with and dropped my trigger guard and it snapped in half! :o :( Being as its the Marushin one it is only made of plastic and it snapped where I had removed a lot of material to accomadate the trigger housing. Never mine I was thinking about getting a RS trigger guard anyway so have just ordered one from ebay fo $20 inc p&P :D
